Other bird-watching destinations

Most of the Parikkala is great for bird watching. There is big variation of habitats and birds are numerous. Everymans rights give you a permit to visit all sights. Dont enter to gardens or fields without permit.

The Järviluonto (lakeside nature) pages also present other bird-watching destinations, which have towers or other similar structures. Many of these places are also suitable for people of reduced mobility because the towers are not necessarily needed for observing birds.

For watching birds in the forests, it is worthwhile taking, for example, the Pöröpeikonpolku trail or the hiking routes around Oronmylly. Species encountered in these areas include the wood grouse, the black grouse, the hazelhen, the parrot crossbill, the black woodpecker and the Eurasian eagle owl.

Nocturnal songbirds

Almost the whole of Parikkala is good countryside for experiencing nocturnal songbirds. Only the ridges of Salpausselkä are too barren for such species. Both the Blyth's reed warbler and the nightingale are very common. The marsh warbler is a little rarer than the Blyth's reed warbler and more discriminating as far as its environment is concerned. The Eurasian reed warbler and great reed warbler can be seen, not only at Siikalahti but also in other reed bed areas. The grasshopper warbler and river warbler can also be found on the borders of open fields. The numbers of warblers do not normally reach their peak until July. The Savi's warbler and the lanceolated warbler are rare visitors.

The beautiful song of the Eurasian bittern can be heard on early summer nights. In the same way, the Eurasian coot has also spread from Siikalahti to other lakes. The water rail and the spotted crake can usually be seen every year when the little crake and Baillon's crake are also visiting.

At night, you will also hear nightjars and owls, and, towards morning, Eurasian golden orioles.

It's worth going on nocturnal bird-watching excursions from the beginning of May until midway through July. The concert begins after midnight.

You can also take part in a guided excursion.
