At Parikkala, almost 300 different species of birds have been encountered, many of them very rare. In spring and summer, you can see more than 100 species in a single day. Good bird towers, information signs and guidance makes birding easy here!

Through the ages, almost 300 different species of birds have been seen in Parikkala. In spring and summer, you can see more than 100 species in a single day.The diver is a bird that often nests on rugged rocks in lakes. Many pairs of swans also nest there. Horned grebes, goosanders and many different types of duck are also common to the lakes.
Parikkala is aso a nesting site for the Pygmy owl, Tengmalm's owl, tawny owl, Ural owl, Eagle owl, great grey owl, long-eared owl and short-eared owl. The hawk owl and snowy owl are rare winter visitors. 23 species of birds of prey have been encountered in the area. The eastern border of the area is a migration route for white-tailed eagles and golden eagles. Young white-tailed eagles are seen all year round. Buzzards, European honey buzzards, Eurasian hobbies, ospreys and western marsh harriers are common sights in the summer.
In the rushes of the lakes nest Eurasian bitterns, water rails, spotted crakes and great reed warblers. BirdLand in Parikkala is also famous for its nocturnal songbirds such as nightingales, marsh warblers, Blyth's reed warblers, river warblers and grasshopper warblers. Some years, you may also get to see the Savi's warbler and the lanceolated warbler. On night-time treks you will also hear owls and nightjars.
In the forests, you may encounter the wood grouse, black grouse, hazelhen, black woodpecker, three-toed woodpecker, white-backed woodpecker and red-breasted flycatcher. The rustic bunting is mainly a transitory species. The greenish warbler in seen in the region once a year. A few pairs of Siberian jays nest in the oldest forests.
