Plenty to do at any time of year!

Finland's eastern border is one of its 'hottest' regions. In summer, nature provides a wealth of sights to see and things to do. The area's cultural side is also more diverse in summer, and a wide range of different events takes place almost every day.

An endless number of excellent bird-watching sites, a lush and diverse flora, a rich fauna of butterflies and dragonflies and the traces left by the Ice Age offer unforgettable experiences. In spring, places with open water attract beautiful waterfowl; in early summer, night singers give their concerts in the bushes, and in autumn, flocks of cranes and geese rest in the fields.

The natural environment of winter offers a wonderful setting for skiing, snowshoeing, ice-fishing or perhaps some winter photography. The ski tracks are at their best in the holiday period towards the end of February.

A skiing trip in the winter is crowned by a glimpse of the mysterious Siberian jay, the sound of a white-backed woodpecker drumming on a tree trunk or the sight of a wood grouse peeking out of a hollow in the snow. In the still nights of early winter, you can hear the hollow hoots of owls.

If you wish, your ski trek can culminate in a night spent in a lean-to under the starry sky, if you fancy a change from the warmth of your hotel bed.

The area's programme service companies offer plenty of things to do all year round, or you can rent some equipment to try out some different pursuits with your own friends.

Check out what the events calendar has to offer. Parikkala has weekly programmes for people of all ages.
